Can you monetise social networking sites without alienating people?

The Story

It's 2007. Everyone's poking each other on Facebook.

It was clear that social networking was a hugely important area to understand. And we were particularly keen to know if it was possible to make money there.

So we decided to create a Facebook application that added sociability to commerce and vice versa; we made Gimme, a wish list and price comparison engine rolled into one.

Facebookers can use it to tell people what gifts they'd like and see what gifts their friends might want in return. It also searches the web for gift ideas and ratings and opinions on things on your list.

The Result

The trial version of Facebook went well, so we're now thinking of making a version that works everywhere - not just inside the Facebook walled garden. Lots of retail brands are also talking to us about incorporating Gimme thinking into their own affiliate marketing and social network experiences.
